Entertainment doesn’t have to break the bank
No one ever said that being a student would be easy. One of the most difficult parts of being a student is living on a limited budget. After paying your monthly rent and buying your groceries, there’s little left for entertainment. You have to pick and choose what you can afford to do. Fortunately, for students attending the Harris Casel Institute in Melbourne, FL, there are plenty of free and low-cost activities.
Next time you have some free time and are looking for something to do, try these Melbourne attractions.
Go to Paradise!
Paradise Beach is a great place for fun and games. Try the beaches, picnic facilities, grills, and volley ball courts. They even have outdoor showers so you can clean up before heading home. If camping is more your speed, you can visit Sebastian Inlet State Park. Depending on what you like, you can go fishing, camping, or just sit and watch the birds. Another great option for nature lovers is the Botanical Garden of the Florida Institute of Technology. Admission is free, and you can learn about the flora and fauna of our area.
Explore a flea market
Renninger’s Flea and Farmer’s Market is a treasure-hunter’s delight. Stop in and look at everything from jewelry and watches to handbags and pet supplies. There are over 800 booths, so there is plenty to see. Admission is free, but you probably won’t leave without buying something!
Catch an outdoor movie
Brevard County’s Movies in the Park are a great way to enjoy the outdoors while watching a movie with friends or family. See if a food truck event is also scheduled that night, and you might be able to have both dinner and a movie under the stars.
Go to the Library
The Melbourne Public Library is a cool place to relax during hot summer months in Melbourne. If you have children, there’s no better place than the library to entertain them. They have Minecraft classes, Sunday story time, used book sales, and more. Their Facebook page is the best place to find out the special programs that are happening.
Go to a Museum
Melbourne is full of interesting museums. Most of them have an admission price, but there are a few free museums, such as the Foosaner Art Museum of the Florida Institute of Technology. You can tour their exhibits and take in a little culture, and then enjoy the art galleries and gift shops nearby. The Liberty Bell Memorial Museum is another free museum that you might want to visit if you are interested in learning about our nation’s history.
Listen to Live Music
The Melbourne Community Orchestra features free shows throughout the year, especially around holidays. It’s a great opportunity to hear live musicians performing right in your own town. Their repertoire ranges from jazz and pop to classical and patriotic.
We hope these suggestions make it on your list of things to do in Melbourne. It’s a great city with a lot to offer, and the Harris Casel Institute is proud to be a part of it!
