Are you looking for a new career? If you are like many people, you may not know about the wide variety of careers that exist within the nursing, healthcare, and allied health field. This article looks at a few career options that might make sense for you.
The Harris Casel Institute in Melbourne, Florida provides career-focused training in five health-related fields. And the good news is, the training is fast! Our training programs are accelerated short-term programs that can get you into the workforce in one year or less. In other words, you don’t need to get a college degree or go to medical school to have marketable skills in the healthcare field. Read more about our programs below.
This is the shortest training program at Harris Casel, and it can be completed in just 3 weeks. Home health aides typically work for a home healthcare agency. They visit patients in their homes and help take care of their basic needs, such as personal hygiene, getting dressed, or moving about their home.
The Nursing Assistant program at Harris Casel is a 6-week program. It begins with the home health aide training, and goes on for three additional weeks to provide further skill development. Nursing assistants often work in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities where they administer to patients and help them take care of their basic needs.
Patient Care Technicians are more highly trained than nursing assistants. They learn advanced skills such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), EKG, CPR/First Aid, OSHA safety, and more. They can work in nursing homes, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. The training for this program takes 24 weeks (approximately 6 months).
Do you prefer an office setting rather than working directly with patients? Medical billing and coding specialists work in offices, spending most of their day working on a computer. They are responsible for assigning specialized coding to medical records and processing health insurance claims. This training takes about 42 weeks, which is a little less than one year.
At the Harris Casel Institute, our Practical Nursing program takes approximately one year to complete. It prepares students with skills in medical/surgical nursing, including the unique needs of caring for pediatric, OB/GYN, and geriatric patients. Practical nurses are trained to perform patient care duties under the supervision of a registered nurse.
