Don't give up on your job search just because it's the holiday season
If you are job searching, you might be tempted to give up your search during the December holidays. You might wonder: who is hiring in December? If this is how you are feeling, we are here to say: Don’t fall into this trap! If you need to find a job, you should not give up searching in December. Here are five good reasons to forge ahead with your job search:
1. Employers are still hiring
Just because it’s the holidays doesn’t mean that employers aren’t hiring. Some of them may have positions that need to be filled by the end of the year. They may want to get the position filled quickly so that the new employee is ready to start in the near year. Also, depending on your field, some employers are extra busy over the holiday season and may need extra help.
2. There are more networking opportunities
During the holiday season, there tend to be holiday parties and family gatherings. You can use these get-togethers as opportunities for networking and talking about your job search. You never know who might be able to connect you to a job opportunity.
3. There may be less competition
Because some people put their job searches on hold over the holidays, this means there will be fewer people competing with you. Take advantage of this lull, and get your resume out there!
4. You will stand out from the rest
Tackling your job search during the holidays will show employers that you are the kind of person who makes their career a top priority. If you do get called in for an interview, this kind of career drive will stand out.
5. You will keep up your momentum
Job searching can be a long process, and at times, it can be discouraging. But this is no reason to give up. One of the most important keys is keeping up your energy and commitment. If you give up or take a break during December, it can be hard to get started again in the new year. Don’t lose your momentum!
Job Searching in December: Patience Required!
Even with the five great reasons above, you may still find that searching for a job during the holidays requires extra patience, given that many people are out of the office during this time of year. Here are some tips on what to expect.
- Be patient with the hiring process
It may take a hiring manager longer than usual to get back to you, due to people’s vacations and holiday schedules. You may have to wait until January for interviews or job offers to happen. But getting into the system in December at least puts you in a good position when the new year begins.
- Be flexible and available
With these tips in mind, we hope you keep up your job search over the winter holidays. You will be glad you kept up your momentum for the new year. And who knows…Maybe you will find a promising opportunity or two! Whatever the case, we wish you the best of luck!
