Patient Care Technicians: Going a Step Beyond

patient care technician, woman in hospitalPatient Care Technicians get training that goes beyond Nursing Assistant training

Melbourne, FL: At Harris Casel, we are so proud of our students for wanting to begin a career in the field of nursing. Many students choose our nursing assistant program because it is a great starter program to see if you like the field of healthcare. But there’s one program that pushes you to go even further in your career: our Patient Care Technician program. If you think you have what it takes to learn more, you might want to take the challenge!

In our Patient Care Technician program, you will start out by learning the skills and responsibilities that nursing assistants learn, but the coursework will continue. You will learn additional clinical skills and medical knowledge that will qualify you for higher level positions. Here’s how the two programs differ.

Nursing Assistant and Patient Care Technician Training

Our two programs at Harris Casel share some training in common. Below are the topics that you will learn in both our Nursing Assistant and Patient Care Technician programs:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Infectious diseases and blood borne pathogens (including 4 clock hours of HIV/AIDs)
  • Care for the cognitively impaired person
  • Restorative care
  • Measuring vital signs
  • Employability skills and resume writing
  • Externship (unpaid) in healthcare facility

Additional training under PCT program

With the Patient Care Technician program, you will stay in school a little longer, and be prepared for higher-level healthcare skills. Below are some of the skills you will learn if you choose this program.

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Recognizing heart arrhythmias and dysrhythmias
  • Phlebotomy and venipuncture (drawing blood)
  • Collecting lab specimens
  • Caring for patients in a home setting (home health care)
  • Infection control
  • Emergency situations
  • Monitoring vital signs
  • Principles of nutrition
  • Healthcare ethics

This program expands the traditional role of the nursing assistant by offering a broad foundation of knowledge and skills. What do you think? Do you want to go the extra mile and sign up for our PCT program?
