Practical Nursing

How to become a Licensed Practical Nurse

Founded in 2002, the Harris Casel Institute provides allied health training programs for students interested in entering the healthcare field. In all of their nursing training programs, students perform a combination of theoretical coursework and hands-on clinical work, providing them with a thorough and well-rounded education in the fields of their choice.

One of the nursing training programs offered at Harris Casel Institute is the practical nursing training program.  After graduation, students may go on to take the Florida Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses to obtain their license.  These healthcare professionals work primarily in hospitals and long-term care facilities, where they:

  • Check vital signs
  • Provide basic patient care
  • Assist with activities of daily living (grooming, dressing, feeding)
  • Keep patient records

Every student in the practical nursing training program will also participate in a series of clinical externships to develop their hands-on expertise and provide them with opportunities to enhance their communication skills. These externships will take place in a variety of medical facilities, including those specializing in pediatrics, obstetrics, community health, medical surgical nursing, mental health and geriatric care. Students will also train in the Harris Casel Institute student lab, where they’ll have opportunities to work on mannequins and their classmates. At the conclusion of the practical nursing program, students will be eligible to take the Florida Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses and begin their new careers as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). With a 25 percent growth rate in LPN jobs anticipated over the next decade, graduates should find many job opportunities available to them as they begin their new careers in the healthcare field.

This program includes laboratory, classroom and clinical practices for students wishing to be prepared to pass the Florida Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses and to be well prepared to serve as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
